How can you create a comfortable sleeping space for two, save space, and arrange a bedroom or living room? In this situation, opting for a side bed—a horizontal bed that folds away into a cabinet—can be a great solution. But how best to arrange a modern side bed in any interior? The following two methods are among the most well-known and basic—beyond this, it all depends on your imagination, the space you have, and primarily, what you ultimately want to achieve.
Before we proceed, we need to answer an important question that will determine the final result: Should our desired piece of furniture, combining a bed and a side bed, be visible or not?
Method one – so where is the side bed?
A wall bed is an ideal solution for spaces that typically serve other functions besides a bedroom. In such rooms, a side bed works perfectly. It can literally disappear into a library wall, a modern wall unit, or bookshelves. Another way to conceal it is by combining it with a sofa. With over 50 different finishing options available, the side bed can be integrated into the cabinetry to create a cohesive stylistic effect. Our side bed is also available in a horizontal version – in the Transforms collection, this is the Clickbed O Sofa. In this version, when opening, the sofa will disappear under the mattress, eliminating the need to move furniture.
This solution is also ideal for a narrow bedroom where one wall might be dedicated to a custom wardrobe. This was the case in the project shown in the photos, which we recently had the pleasure of working on. Our client had a particularly small room and wanted to incorporate both a wardrobe and a comfortable bed while leaving as much free living space as possible.
Universal Solution for Small Bedrooms
We had no doubts that the most advantageous solution in this situation would be the side bed, which would meet all the client’s requirements and expectations. In this way, in a small space not exceeding 2 meters, we were able to effortlessly arrange a comfortable bedroom and wardrobe while leaving plenty of free space.
The side bed is perfect even for exceptionally small rooms, as illustrated by the example presented. The narrowest horizontal folding bed we offer, the ClickBed O, is a double bed with a width of 157 cm (for a 140×200 mattress). The maximum width of the bed is 197 cm and is designed for a 180×200 mattress. Undoubtedly, such a side bed will be the most comfortable solution, especially in narrow spaces, where it will perform much better than a vertically folding bed in a cabinet.
Method two – “on display”
The “disappearing” method is as popular among our clients as the method that showcases the side bed as a separate piece of furniture. Even though the wall bed becomes a distinct element of the room’s decor, it still allows for space savings in the living area. The choice then remains whether to opt for a side bed with a simple casing or one with additional cabinetry and functionalities, though different from a full wall unit.
Choosing a wall bed “on display” offers many additional benefits. The bed, which folds horizontally into its construction, achieves a low profile. This leaves a lot of wall space available for various arrangements. You can use this space for separate furniture, such as a bookshelf. It’s also a great spot for a family photo collection or displaying nostalgic keepsakes. Additionally, a side bed with an extra top section featuring shelves and cabinets helps solve the problem of “where to put the wardrobe?” The space for it is situated right above the bed and is integrated into the side bed itself.
Where does such a solution work best?
A side bed will certainly be an extremely functional idea for children’s or teenage rooms that require a lot of free space. This solution also works well in a bedroom for two that is already partially furnished, where you want to integrate the bed into the existing space. Conversely, when setting up an apartment with minimal furniture expenses, choosing a wall bed with an additional top section provides a multifunctional piece of furniture, allowing you to defer further room setup. By opting for a side bed, you achieve additional savings, keep your budget secure, and still have access to all necessary functions—it’s a win-win!
